Bastian Meyer

I’m Bastian Meyer, a tattoo artist, author and the founder of INKNATION. Tattooing brings together what drives me: human connection, creativity and the desire to build something.

My path has been shaped by detours, encounters and learning. INKNATION is its continuation: starting with everyday studio life to imagine useful, easy-to-use tools that support the craft.

Created by tattoo artists. For tattoo artists.

MY JOURNEY

THE JOURNEY
BEFORE THE BRAND.

THE BEGINNINGS

A PASSION.
THEN A MACHINE.

For my eighteenth birthday, my mother gave me my first two tattoos. I first entered this world as a client. Then friends started working in the trade, and I began to discover what went on behind the scenes.

During my technical training in engineering, I did an internship with my tattoo artist to understand and improve a tattoo machine. To design it, I learned how to use it. By the end of the internship, my own printed machine worked. My first steps in tattooing were also my first steps as a tool maker.

DESIGN AND BUSINESS

THE PATH
WASN’T STRAIGHT.

I continued in my original field for a while, then set up a vehicle wrapping and business communications company. There I learned to work with graphics software, turn ideas into projects and run a business.

A major personal upheaval later made me reconsider what I truly wanted to do. I was looking for a profession where creativity, entrepreneurship and human connection would have equal importance. I returned to tattooing with everything those experiences had taught me.

LEARNING AND STUDIOS

LEARN. PRACTISE.
START AGAIN.

Seminars, training, practice on synthetic skin and encounters with tattoo artists who supported me: I learned step by step. Looking at my mistakes and starting again has always been part of that process.

I worked in several studios and opened a few of my own. That journey took me to Leto Tattoo Studio in Montreux. Each experience helped me better understand what I wanted to build, how I wanted to welcome my clients and what I still had to learn.

REALISM AND HUMAN CONNECTION

A FACE.
A STORY.

At first I was drawn to dark art and horror, then to horror realism. Projects and practice gradually led me towards realism and portraits, particularly portraits of women. An expression, a look or a light can tell so much.

But behind every project is a person trusting me with their skin. Listening, respecting their story and recognising my own limits matter as much to me as the craft itself. That trust gives meaning to my work.

WHAT COMES NEXT / INKNATION

BUILDING
SOMETHING USEFUL.

Mistakes, successes and questioning myself taught me to look at the profession as a whole. You need to create, but also organise the studio, choose equipment, run a business and make your work known.

With INKNATION, I want to turn that experience into practical solutions. From equipment to creative tools, my aim remains the same: make tattoo artists’ everyday work simpler, leaving more room for their art and their clients.

PASSING IT ON / THE BOOK

THE SIX ROLES
OF AN ASPIRING TATTOO ARTIST

I wrote this book to share what working in the field has taught me, including my mistakes, successes and the lessons I drew from them. Tattooing means wearing several hats: the human being, the tattoo artist, the accountant, the entrepreneur, the salesperson and the communicator.

I hope to offer guidance to those starting out and put into words what practising artists experience. I share my experience to help each person reflect, ask questions and find their own way.

From my experience to your own path.
